Album review
By the time of this recording, Carla Bley and Steve Swallow had been working together in various settings for over 20 years. Swallow had appeared on numerous Bley albums, his lyrical bass playing often featured as a central voice. Bley, who generally played organ on her albums, plays the piano on DUETS. In fact, from this 1988 recording onward, Bley shifted her focus to the piano and continued to explore the possibilities of duets and smaller ensembles. Since the early '70s, Swallow had devoted himself to exclusive exploration of the sonic possibilities of the electric bass guitar.
Most of the compositions on DUETS are new and written by Bley, although her wonderfully mechanical "Walking Batteriewoman" is revisited, and a couple of Swallow-penned pieces are included. Bley and Swallow close the album with the traditional "Soon I Will Be Done With The Troubles Of This World," its hymnal bearing alternately mournful and hopeful, and completely heartfelt.
